Medal of Honor DisplayA special area located inside the walk through vault was set aside to honor all Medal of Honor recipients. A digital kiosk is available with all recipients and their information included from Civil War thru present day Afghanistan. Fort Chadbourne also has all the Medals of Honor on display beginning with the earlier Medals issued in the 1800’s, up to the Medals of today. The Medals were donated by James Kenney of San Antonio, along with years of research. All of his clippings, articles, and photographs have been placed in a database, and each Medal of Honor recipient has a file. Although, some recipients have a tremendous amount of information, others may have nothing more than a mention that they were issued the Medal of Honor. Fort Chadbourne also had six soldiers that served at Fort Chadbourne, who were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions during the Civil War. Each of these men has a special tribute. They were Major General David Sloane Stanley, 2nd Dragoons, Company C, Brigadier General Henry Clay Wood, 1st Infantry, Company D, Major Peter Martin Boehm, 4th Cavalry, Company A, Major General Zenus Randall Bliss, 8th Infantry, Company A, Lt.Colonel Eugene Beauharnais Beaumont, 4th Cavalry, Company A, and Major Joseph S. Hedges 4th Cavalry, Company D. The museum has Medal of Honor recipient Major Peter Boehm’s saber on display. It was given to him for his bravery at Dinwiddie Court House, Virginia. On loan from Jackson Armory in Dallas, is a special Henry Repeating Rifle that belonged to Alanson Pitts Webber. He was awarded the Medal for his actions at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. Webber, who was a Fife Major, used the rapid fire Henry Repeating Rifle to hold off the Rebels long enough for his company to take cover below a crest, saving many lives. Major General Patrick Brady donated his uniform and is on display within the Medal of Honor area. There are also three pistols belonging to Medal of Honor recipients Robert G. Carter, Frank Baldwin and James Dosher. Baldwin is one of only 19 double Medal of Honor recipients. |
