Native American HistoryThe Comanche and Kiowa were the two main Native American tribes associated with Fort Chadbourne. Chiefs Satanta, Buffalo Hump, Satank, Kicking Bird, and Big Tree all roamed freely through the area.
One lesser known Comanche, Chief Mulaquetop is well known at Fort Chadbourne for the famous horse race that took place between the Indians and the soldiers. The Comanche fooled the soldiers into thinking they had nothing but a nag of a horse to race against some of the officer’s best horses. After several races, and all the soldier’s pockets were empty, it was revealed that the Comanche pony was a race horse and had won many races against the Kickapoo earlier in the year. |
